Brand Less Ordinary : HomeofMillican.com – Story entwined

I can have days where all I see are companies telling their audience ‘start growing your business today!’ or retailers shouting ‘buy now!’. I’m set the challenge to rethink their proposition. To put some soul into what they present and what they help people achieve.

Then you’re gently reminded. Not all businesses are the same.

Millican make bags. They make bags in a wonderful way. They’re embracing the story of Millican Dalton. A man who, at the turn of the 19th century, gave up his career in London to head to the Lake District and live the great outdoors.

Most of us have that ‘fuck it’ let’s do different moment. Millican lived that moment. 100 years on, Millican are reliving that moment through the story they share. That story is retold through the products they create. You can see the products here.

The video above, however, doesn’t talk about the products. The simple narrative introduces us to the mindset of Millican Dalton. You can read more about Millican Dalton’s life here

The video itself is beautiful. The Lake District scenery is stunning. It captures you for a few minutes. Maybe it challenges you to rethink? Maybe it simply evokes curiosity? Maybe the peace and tranquility helped you to unwind?

Millican Dalton’s life-story offers a wealth of inspiration for the modern day adventurer. For him, he felt true freedom when he was living simply out in nature. We feel the same way. – House of Millican

The challenge Millican (the makers) set is to embrace the simplicity of nature. It just so happens that they’ve made a product to help you on that path.

Clever stuff. Very clever stuff.

This is what we, as makers and creators, can be doing right now. Purposeful difference. Showing our kind of people what we stand for.

I need to head to the Lake District again very soon.
